South River Road Ride

Distance:
25.75 Miles
Ride Time:
1.5 to 2.0 hours
The South river road route is a great route to do as a training ride, a quick after work spin, or a vertical compliance test for your bike. Due to the extreme variability of the road conditions on the local levies around Sacramento, the ride makes a good choice for you to put your gear or latest tune up through the ringer. It would be safe to say that you should make sure to check that your water bottle cages have a tight grip on your bottles. There is a prolific wind presence on this ride as well so be ready to deal with lots of resistance from that. On top of a general training ride, this is an ideal ride to do after work.
There is a race ride along this route which starts at 6:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays that tends to be rather fast and has frequent crashes. I would avoid this one unless you are very experienced. IkonCycles does not host the aforementioned rides and as such is not responsible for the carnage that happens on these rides. If you are interested in joining them, you should find the organizers of the rides and ask for permission to join.
Starting on South Land Park Blvd. the route heads south through the neighborhoods of South Land Park. Most of these roads are residential and have very light traffic. As you head south toward the town of Freeport, you parallel the Sacramento River for about a mile. Just after the town (very small) you cross the Freeport Bridge which brings you to the west side of the levy and South River road. You continue following South River Road for around 15 along which you will have great views of the river and some of the shrinking farm land that was once so prevalent in the area. After leaving the levy road, the route goes through an industrial area, and finally back over the river to downtown Sacramento. The return portion of the trip is through mostly the Land Park neighborhood and provides a good easy ride by which to cool down by.
